whenever anyone contacts us about web design or website maintenance there are a number of questions that are often asked, we have tried to answer many of these questions below.

how much does a web site cost?
this is probably the most often asked question and the simple answer is it depends. it depends on many factors including how many pages you will have, whether or not you will sell products on your site, how much graphical work is needed, how much programming is needed. however as an example a small web site with just a few static pages would cost around $500 whereas a larger website with ecommerce, a blog and other features could cost $1000's . before starting work we will discuss your requirements and provide you with a a fixed quotation so there are no nasty surprises
what other costs are involved?
once you have a website designed and built you will need some web hosting and will also need to purchase a domain name, both of which are recurring costs. we can help you find a suitable web host should you not already have one.
what is web hosting?
web hosting is a monthly or yearly fee that you pay to have your site accessible on the internet. we recommend a hillsboro web hosting company called coho to all our web design clients.
can we choose you to design my web site and use our own web hosting?
yes of course - your web site can be hosted anywhere you choose. however depending on the complexity of your site there may be specific requirements needed of you web host. we can discuss these with you should it be necessary and advise on appropriate action
do you offer any type of discounts?
yes we do. we offer a 20% discount on our rates to non profit organizations and also to members of the oregon lavender association, who are one of out clients. if a member organization is a brown string client then we also offer that organizations members the same 20% discount.
why does my business need a website?
years ago potential customers would have used the yellow pages to find companies to do business with, nowadays more and more people are using the internet as their first resource. a website is open for business 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year and can reach millions of people. without a website you are losing out on potential customers.
how do we update or make changes to our website?
the easiest way is to let us handle them for you, however we understand that some people would like to do these themselves. all our sites are built using latest web standards, there are no locked files or propriety software. if you have a basic understanding of html, css and ftp you will be able to make edits to your site. many of our clients use software from adobe called contribute to edit their sites, which means they don't need to have any programming skills. if your site is going to need constant updates then it may be worth considering having the site built with a content management system (cms), such as wordpress or joomla. this is something we can discuss if necessary.
we already have a website and it needs updating, can you help us?
yes we can. we can make changes to an existing site, convert an existing site to modern web standards or design a site from scratch
who owns the website once the website design is completed?
you do - assuming you pay your final invoice!
do you offer search engine optimization?
we do not currently offer this service , however we do strive to make our designs as search engine friendly as possible. remember that good search engine positioning relies heavily on having lots of appropriate content, there is no magic wand that can be waved to get straight to number one in google
ok what are the next steps?
the best thing to do is download our planning worksheet. the more of this you fill in the easier it will be during the consultation phase. once you feel that you have a good idea of what you want from a website we can then arrange a meeting to discuss your project, this can be done over the phone or via email but if you are in the portland / hillsboro area its often a good idea to meet in person. we can come to your offices, you can come to ours or we can simply meet for coffee somewhere in between. at this point there is no cost or obligation to you. after our meeting we would then provide you with a quote for the work
